Are you at risk of disease in your workplace?

All of us are under threat from workplace illnesses. However, some of us are at greater risk due to the nature of our work environments.

Some of the more common illnesses are:

  • Influenza (Flu)
  • Hepatits A & B
  • Tetanus

Your risk of Flu is higher if your job involves:

  • Working closely with others
  • Working in an airconditioned office environment
  • Working with children
  • Working in a healthcare setting
  • Having direct contact with other people  

  

Your risk of Hepatitis A is higher if your job involves:

  • Contact with young children
  • Exposure to human faeces
  • Travel to countries where Hepatitis A is common

  

Your risk of Hepatitis B is higher if your job involves:

  • Exposure to human blood and body fluids
  • Exposure to sharp objects that may carry contaminated body fluids
  • Clearing and disposing of waste products
  • Handling potentially contaminated laundry from healthcare settings
  • Working with emergency services (rescue, first aid etc)
  • Cleaning & treating wounds
  • Working in schools with children or adults with learning difficulties or mental handicap
  • Working closely with high risk individuals (drug users, prostitutes etc)
  • Long term travel to countries where Hepatitis B is common

  

Your risk of Tetanus is higher if your job involves:

  • Risk of injury with wounds contaminated with dirt, saliva, faeces
  • Risk of puncture wounds
  • Risk of injury from being hit by a thrown object
  • Risk of burns, frostbite or crush injuries 
  • Working with wastewater or potentially contaminated soil

  

Your risk of Typhoid is higher if your job involves:

  • Working with wastewater
  • Travel to countries where Typhoid is common
